We are seeking workshop proposals for the upcoming 12th Annual Community Empowerment Through Black Men Healing Conference being held on June 18-19, 2020 at Metropolitan State University, St. Paul Campus. This year’s objective will be to look beyond community violence to deeper issues like racial trauma, adverse childhood experiences, domestic violence and community’s relationship with systems. Also, will explore strategies to increase protective factors that leads to community health and healing.

Since its inception in 2009, the mission of the conference has provided an opportunity for meaningful community engagement and access to national and local educators, and community practitioners to discuss and introduce practical culturally sensitive trauma informed initiatives leading to the improved health and wellness of African American men and their families. We realize that a stronger, thriving African American community improves the health of the community and the society as a whole.

We are seeking submissions that will provide conference attendees with the best culturally competent and community based strategies on the following topics:


  • Family Stability Policy

  • Community’s Relationship with Systems

  • State and local efforts to create culturally sensitive trauma informed systems (i.e. equity, criminal justice, child welfare, housing and education systems)


  • Open to presentations on other topics related to

  • trauma awareness

  • healing

  • resilience

  • policy change

  • Professional self-care and/or healing

  • Best practices around incorporating African principles


  • Grief and Loss

  • Domestic Violence

  • Historical and Racial trauma

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences

Note:  Open to presentations on other topics related to trauma awareness, healing, resilience and policy change.


  • Multi-generational Healing

  • Healthy/Non-Violent relationships

  • Professional self-care and/or healing

  • Best practices around incorporating African principles

  • Community-based healing efforts to building resilience and protective factors

Speaker Responsibilities

  • You will need to be available on Thursday the June 18th at 10:30 and 1pm.

  • Supply a laptop and/or the presentation on a flash drive.

  • Will provide an electronic copy of handout materials by June 1, 2020 to be posted on the conference website for the attendees to download.  And a minimum of 40 to accommodate attendees the day of the workshop.

  • Speakers may not sell or promote a product during workshop time. Workshops are strictly educational.
